What is a VPN?

October 09, 2024

For the past fifteen or more years, I have been utilizing VPNs on a regular basis, particularly when I travel overseas. Simply put, they're very good tools for protecting data while it's online and getting around irksome limitations.
I am aware that there are still a lot of individuals who don't fully grasp VPNs, and that finding in-depth online tutorials is challenging.
I therefore decided to just compile my own introduction to VPNs. In it, I addressed the benefits of using VPNs, what are the best VPNs available right now, how they operate, and much more. I also included thorough yet understandable descriptions of how VPNs operate.

What is a VPN?

Your internet privacy and data are protected by a virtual private network or VPN. Virtual Private Network, or VPN for short, is so named because it creates a private network, also known as a VPN tunnel or connection, that you may use to browse the internet safely.

You must first use a premium VPN provider to use a VPN. Next, you utilize its app to download and install on your device, launch it, and establish a VPN server.

How Does a VPN Work?

Your internet service provider's (ISP) network is the first thing your connection passes through when you browse the web. Your device can connect to Internet servers and other devices on the internet by using the IP address that your ISP assigns it. This is the appearance of your internet connection:

Your Device → ISP → Internet

In other words, a VPN stands in for you when you connect to the internet. Your connection travels across the network of your internet service provider (ISP), the VPN server, and ultimately the internet when you use a VPN. This is the appearance of a VPN connection:

Your Device → VPN App → ISP → VPN Server → Internet

6 Reasons to Use a VPN

VPN is for anyone and everyone who wants to protect their privacy. But it can also do so much more. Some of the use cases for VPN include:

  • Protecting your IP address from prying eyes, including snooping ad companies.
  • Ensuring internet service providers can’t monitor your browsing habits.
  • Gaining access to streaming services and social networks that would otherwise be out of reach due to geographical restrictions — never miss that hit new show again!
  • Accessing your banking and other apps even when you’re out of the country.
  • Staying safe even when using free Wi-Fi networks in cafes and other public locations.
  • Paying less — choose which country to buy your online services from to save money on local pricing.
